I’ve known for a while that I have a problem when it comes to buying books. Trust me, my friends and family do not hesitate to point it out. I even make jokes about it sometimes. But what can I say?
I love books. I love the way they feel and smell and what they contain. I never leave the house without a book. I keep one in my purse, one in my car, and about three hundred split between my kindle and audible. So there is never a moment when I don’t have access to one.
I listen to audiobooks in the car and when I am cleaning and when I am trying to fall asleep at night. I read on my kindle in line at the store and at the doctor’s office and at work. I read physical books at home or while I am waiting in the car.
But here is my question?
Why is this a bad thing?
Sure, I spend a little too much money on books. I could probably save quite a bit if I stopped buying them, but I love growing my collection. I love knowing that I will always have something new to read. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love supporting other authors!
A new book in one of my favorite series’s just came out and I ended up buying like five copies. Sounds excessive right? I don’t see it that way! I got both versions of the cover, the audiobook, the e-book, and a bookish box that contained it. I love supporting this author because she is one of my favorites. I gave away one of the copies because let’s be honest, I do not need three hardback copies of this book.
My point is I buy books not only because I love them but because I understand how much work goes into writing a book. Since I got serious about my writing, the number of books I buy has increased significantly.
I believe that more people need to buy books. Yes, Wattpad is an incredible app. Yes, there are plenty of other ways to read for free. But it is important to support our authors by buying their books!
I love this. I hear from people all the time, “What ANOTHER book?” even if I happen to stumble across a free book bin! There are worse things to buy and I do get around to reading all of them.
You know…eventually.
Great post! Keep buying those books.
